SMA & CMDFWA Dinner 2011

An update, finally!

After a quiet few weeks on the SMA front, there are 2 events coming up that you might be interested in:

Piece of news #1
To celebrate the end of the term with chips & (soft) drink, we are having a casual meet up on THIS Thursday 11th August after lectures/case histories. Come to The Byrneleigh on Hampden Rd.

Anyone is welcome- drag along whoever looks thirsty ;)

Feel free to head down whenever you finish your lecture/lab, but about 4pm should suit everyone.

Piece of news #2
The Annual SMA & CMDFWA Dinner is on Wednesday 24th August.
Have a peek at the fabulous poster below for specific details.

Tickets are seriously limited, and once we have no more...there will be no more. Thursday at The Byrneleigh will be the perfect time to give your name & $35 to Trish or Steph to save your spot! If you can't make it, email us or chat to us for alternative arrangements.

Best of luck for the last week of rotation!

We will leave you with this amazing song by Chris Tomlin.

What is it to you?

What do you know about Easter?
This year, was it about eating too much chocolate and having an excuse to have a public holiday?

Perhaps whilst you tuck into some hot-cross buns this week, ask yourself:
"what is the reason behind Easter?"
(perhaps do this whilst making some hot cross buns - a yummy recipe here)
(admittedly this post is a bit late - we were having too much fun with our free time!)

Once you are done with that question, you can ask yourself:
What is happening with SMA at the moment?
Answer- lots of things!

1. SMA Camp is coming up. It is not too late to register for this wonderful event.
See more info here!

2. Our next monthly meet up is very very soon. In fact, next week on Thursday 5th May at 7-9pm.
At the moment we are planning on having it at Steph's house- only 15-20 minutes from uni in Scarborough. Let us know if this poses difficulties!! Address will be given via email.

We will be eating nachos, chatting & having some discussion/prayer.
Everyone is welcome!!

Look out for more details closer to the date.

Week 10/11

A gossip betrays a confidence,
but a trustworthy person keeps a secret
Proverbs 11:13

Hey ladies and gents!  We hope everyone’s finding it bearable and not too stressful since we’re heading into the last week of our term 2!  Time flies just too quickly these days…

Anyway, on Thursday 31st, we had our meet-up for the month of March, where we made some pizzas, discussed our rotations, and talked about what it means to have mercy (in a Christian sense) and apply it to medicine.
For the time being, we've decided to put the next meet-up on Thursday the 28th of April (subject to change).  Remember, anyone is welcome!  More details to come soon :)

Also there’s a couple of reminders for everyone to take note of:

Firstly, GRILL-A-CHRISTIAN is coming up on Thursday 14th of April.  Sick of being grilled by your consultant?  Here's your chance to channel some grilling onto other people!
This event will be held at Dalkeith Anglicanwith a BBQ from 6pm and the festivities beginning at 7pm!  It's a great night in which people have the chance to bring up their burning questions about Christianity to a panel of mature Christians.  Why you should come:

  • It's a great chance to network with some other year groups/grads
  • Get your burning questions answered!
  • Anonymous text-line so you can grill-away!

Secondly, SMA Camp is around the corner!  This year, it'll be running from the 6th-8th of May at Advent Park with the theme of "Hope in Suffering" - a particularly relevant theme given what's been happening around the world lately, as well as being applicable to our medical lives.
We'll let you know as soon as registration opens - from the sounds of it, it'll be a measly $55 for the whole weekend (with partial registration on offer as well)!

Anyway, we hope you have a great week!  Good luck for the psych kids who have their long-case on Thursday, and the musculoskeletal folks who have an assessment on Friday arvo.

Week 7/8

"Do not let your hearts be troubled
Trust in God; trust also in me.”
Proverbs 3:5

We've just finished the 5th week of our 1st rotation (or 1st week for you people in geriatrics)...  So it's more than half way through!!  Hopefully you are coping with the stress, learning lots and enjoying being in the hospital environment :)

In light of the deeply saddening events in Japan, the above quote from Proverbs is really reassuring. Such disasters also remind us to appreciate what we do have. Just the Little Things is a daily blog we came across about little things we probably forget to appreciate in life. A little sample:

SMA-wise, the very successful Soiree was held last Tuesday (see some pics below) and delicious food & lots of fun was had by all!

We are also looking forward to our next year group gathering on Thursday 31st March at 7.30pm. If you are interested, we would love for you to shoot us an email so we can choose a venue that is suitable.

That is all for now! Have a lovely weekend and an even better week!

Week 5

Well-spoken words bring satisfaction,
Well-done work has its own reward.
Proverbs 12:14

Did you know that we're pretty darn close to being half-way through our first rotations?  Scary!!
Anyway, we hope that you all are holding up just fine and are getting through whatever uni's currently throwing at you, such as 7am ward-rounds, cranky consultants, discharge summaries and research projects.

So if it's all a bit over-whelming, remember to take some time out this week to re-evaluate and ponder what you want this year to bring to you.  Steph and I both find that writing things down and devoting time to our hobbies (such as tending to our other blog - yes, that was a shameless plug!, photography, treasure-hunting in op-shops) also makes life that little bit more bearable.  (Also, we're both doing psychiatry at the moment so we don't have that much to complain about anyway)

For our regulars and those who are interested in seeing what SMA is about, pencil into your diaries our March meet-up, which will be held on the 31st of this month.  More details will be coming your way soon!

Soon, we'll also let you know about SMA Soiree - an inter-year even that is held annually for the newest SMA members to get to know who's who.  As 4th-years and up, we're in charge of entrees and dessert, so expect to be in for a treat!

And remember,
If you feel you missed the SMA-boat ever since first year and you would like to join in on our frivolities, just send us an email or come to speak to us!

 Have a fantastic week,
Trish & Steph

Week 4

Hi everyone!
We are now into our second week of rotations and I don't know about you, but we are exhausted and totally drained!  So it is even more important than ever to make sure you continue to nourish not just your mind but the rest of you as well!!

Don't forget to eat delicious food! (recipe here)

Don't forget to continue to ask for help!
Here is a nice little prayer about waiting. I think we've all been doing a lot of that lately!

God of the waiting, wait with us.
In the darkness, your Son waited for what was to come.
Be near us as we keep watch over the people who need you more than we do,

as they wait for life, for death, for hope, for despair.
For with you, we wait for the promise of a new dawn.

And last but not least, don't forget our meet up THIS Thursday!! Click the link for details if you have forgotten :)

Just to finish off, a cute little motto that can be useful to simplify a busy life...
Important

See you on Thursday!
